Growing housing demands after WW2 (1945) lead to a quick-fix housing scheme in the 60s and early 70s, seeing high rise flats
Problems:
Social: Overcrowding, crime, drugs, poor educational achievement
Environment: litter, graffiti, poor quality housing, urban decay
Economic: Few jobs- unemployment, loss of income and business due to crime
In the 1990s The City Challenge was started, a huge initiative to regenerate the inner city by including local authorities, private business and the local community
High rise flats and crescents were demolished but older buildings with character were retained
Hulme received £37.5 million from City Challenge
Homes were redesigned to be more energy and water efficient and be more pleasant
Traditional layouts returned
Friendly welcoming architectural designs and methods used
The Zion Arts centre is a redeveloped church, created by the City challenge to provide a facility for dance and music, but also allow the individual ethnic groups to intermingle
Hulme Park was the first new large park seen in Manchester for over 60 years. It contains substantial play and sports areas but also gives a green area to give relief from its dense urban surroundings
