What is filtration
Used to separate and insoluble solid from a liquid
Pour the mixture through filter paper
liquid will run into flask
solid will stay in filter paper
What is crystallisation
Separate a soluble solid from a liquid
pour solution to evaporating dish heat gently
some water will evaporate
when crystal start to form stop heating and leave to cool
Crystals will start form
filter them out
What is chromatography
Method used to separate a mixture of soluble substances and identify them
In chromatography what is the mobile phase
Where the molecules can move
The mobile phase in chromatography is the solvent
In chromatography what is the stationary phase
When molecules can’t move
In chromatography the stationary phase is the filterpaper
How do you set up chromatography
Draw a line near the bottom of filterpaper it’s the baseline
use pencil
Put a spot of mixture to be separated on the line
put solvent into beaker
dip bottom of paper but not spotted the solvent
solvent will move up the paper when the chemicals dissolve in the solvent
As they move up the paper you will see the different chemicals in the sample separate out forming spots in different places on the paper
