Expanding single brackets
If you're told to expand something like 5x(2x +1) then you multiply the term outside the brackets with the terms inside the brackets. So 5x times 2x equals 10x² and 5x times 1 equals 5x. So the overall answer is 10x² + 5x. Be careful because if it's a + inside the brackets then you write it with a + but if it's a - then you write it with a -.
Expanding double brackets
If you're told to expand something like (5x - 6)(3x + 1) then you times the terms in the brackets with the terms in the other brackets. So 5x times 3x equals 15x², -6 times 1 equals -6, 5x times 1 equals 5x and -6 times 3x equals -18x. So when you put it together it becomes 15x² - 6 + 5x - 18x. 5x - 18x equals -13x so the answer is 15x² - 18x - 6. Your answer should always be written in the form x² + x + the ordinary number.
Practice
Expand:
3x(2x + 8)
6x(7x - 4)
-5x(8x+2)
(3x + 6)(5x + 3)
(6x + 4)(7x - 3)
(9x - 5)(7x - 2)
Remember, a positive times a positive is a positive, a positive times a negative is a negative, a negative times a positive is a negative and a negative times a negative is a positive.
