What is the compliment systems role in the defense of the body?
The complement system leads to inflammation, cytolysis. The complement proteins bind together to form a pore in the microbes cell membrane called the membrane attach complex (MAC), causing cytolysis and death.
When does adaptive immunity play its role?
Adaptive immunity is the 3rd and final line of defense after the inate immunity fails to destroy or remove the microbial pathogen.
What are the 2 sides of adaptive immunity? Describe each
Humoral and cell-mediated.
Humoral- includes B lymphocytes (B cells), antibodies and combats extracellular pathogens.
Cell mediated- includes T cells, interact with APCs (antigen presenting cells) and combats intracellular pathogens.
