Trust vs. Mistrust

Basic needs met = develop sense of trust
Needs not satisfied = develop mistrust of others
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
1.5 - 3 yrs old
Control own actions and act independently = develop sense of autonomy
Fail to do so = experience shame and doubt own abilities
Initiative vs. Guilt
3 - 6 yrs old
Get what they want while acting responsibly = develop sense of initiative
Impulses not kept in check by sense of guilt = become under disciplined
Made to feel overly guilty = lack of initiative
Competence vs. Inferiority
6 - 12 yrs old
Master knowledge and skills necessary for adult life = develop sense of competence
Unable to achieve competence = feel inferior and develop low self-esteem
Identity vs. Role Confusion
12 - 21 yrs old
Successfully experiment with different roles = develop sense of personal identity
Fail to do so = become confused about who they are
Intimacy vs. Isolation
21 - 30 yrs old
Successfully develop close relationships = gain sense of intimacy
Unable to do so = feel socially isolated
Generativity vs. Stagnation
30 - 65 yrs old
Believe they are contributing to the world and the next generation = develop sense of generativity
Fail to do so = experience sense of stagnation
Integrity vs. Despair
65+ yrs old
Successfully managed previous crises in their life = feel sense of integrity
Regret many life choices = feel sense of despair
