Group I Carbonates, Hydroxides, Nitrates/Nitrides, Oxides
1) Carbonate:
Na, K, Rb and Cs soluble and thermally stable
Li and Mg insoluble and thermally unstable
2) Hydroxides:
Na, K, Rb and Cs thermally stable
Li and Mg thermally unstable
3)Nitrates/Nitrides:
Na, K, Rb and Cs decomposes to form nitrites; does not form nitrides
Li and Mg decomposes to form oxides; form nitrides
4) Oxides
Na, K, Rb and Cs forms peroxides; predominantly ionic
Li and Mg does not form peroxides; ionic with covalent character
Group II Chlorides, Oxides and Hydroxides
1) Chlorides:
Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba ionic and does not hydrolyse
Be and Al covalent and completely hyrdolyses to give acidic solution
2) Oxides and Hydroxides:
Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba basic
Be and Al amphoteric
Group III Chlorides, Oxides and Elements
1) Chlorides
Al less readily hydrolysed
B and Si hydrolyses readily
2) Oxides
Al amphoteric, ionic oxide with covalent character
B and Si acidic, covalent oxides
3) Element
