Athens was the birthplace of?
Democracy. Democracy means "rule the people"
2400 years ago, Athens hada system of government called
Direct democracy. Means that everyone could vote on all matters
The problem in Athens was only,,
MEN in Athens could vote. Slaves/women/immigrants had no say. This type of democracy is not practical for large populations
(keep people in control) Thomas Hobbes believes that people are
Essentially bad.
-IF they were alone = They would be greedy.
-Therefore in order to prevent lack of GOVERNMENT, people had to SURRENDER FREEDOM TO KEEP ORDER.
-There would be a ruler who provided order and stability. PEOPLE HAD TO SHOW COMPLETE OBEDIENCE.
-This belief suits authoritarian governing systems.
(protect rights and freedom) John Locke believed people are essentially
Essentially Good.
-thought if humans were left alone would work to do good things.
-people are born with rights and the purpose of government is to PROTECT THESE RIGHTS
-people will agree to support the government.
-LOCKE BELIEVED IF GOVERNMENT FAILED TO PROTECT PEOPLES RIGHT, THE PEOPLE HAD A DUTY TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT
(Lockes ideas are the basis of our own modern democracy)
