What are the three "types" of governments that exist?

1. Democratic- the people control the gov't
2. Authoritarian- the gov't controls the people
What is an authoritarian government?
A government in which the government controls the people.
What is totalitarianism?
When one person has complete and total control over a country.
What are the characteristics of a totalitarian government?
-The gov't has no concern for people's freedoms, rights, or opinions
-Power was accumulated by force, and maintained by fear and propaganda
-The gov't has total control over all industries and resources
(think North Korea)
How does a totalitarian government rise to power and how does it maintain this power?

What is propaganda and what is its purpose in a totalitarian regime?
Propaganda is the method of getting the public to believe what the gov't wants them to believe.
Its purpose in a totalitarian regime is to get citizens to remain loyal to their country and leader.
What is an absolute monarchy, dictatorship, an oligarchy and a theocracy?
-Absolute monarchy: the gov't is controlled by a king who has absolute power and the power is passed down through bloodline
-Dictatorship: a gov't where one single person rules and has complete and total control over the country
-Oligarchy: gov't in which a small elite group rules(usually a single political party or a race)
-Theocracy: a gov't where the rules rule on behalf of a religion or as directed by a religious or holy being
What is a political party?
A group of people with similar beliefs and/or ideas
Which political party is most closely associated with oligarchies? What country has an oligarchy?
