Biological perspective p.52
Concerned with the links between biology & behaviour. Includes psychologists working in neuroscience, behaviour genetics, & evolutionary psychology. These researchers may call themselves behavioural neuroscientists, neuropsychologists, behaviour geneticists, physiological psychologists, or biopsychologists.
Neuron p.53
A nervce cell; the basic building block the nervous system.
Dendrites p.53
A neuron's bushy, branching extensions that receive messages & conduct impulses toeard the cell body.
Axon p.53
The neuron extension that passes messages through its branches to other neurons or to muscles or glands.
Myelin sheath p.53
A fatty issue layer segmentally encasing the axons of some neurons; enables vastly greater transmission speed as neural impulses hop from one node to the next.
Glial cells p.54
Cells in the nervous system that support, nourish & protect neurons; they may also play a role in learning, thinking, & memory.

Action potential p.54
A neural impulse, a brief electrical charge that trabels down an axon.
Refractory period p.55
A period of inactivity after a neuron has fired.
