1)Compare and contrast Truman’s and Eisenhower’s foreign policies. What was new about the “new look”? What illustrates the basic continuity of the containment doctrine?
Thesis: When he was elected, President Eisenhower enhanced and changed Harry Truman’s policy of “containing communism” into a policy of combating communism via an increase in nuclear arms and a sharp decrease in military spending. While this seemed threatening at face value, it would be ineffective in smaller skirmishes, and it would only increase the probability of mutually assured destruction, or two sides destroying each other via nuclear weapons.
3)In what ways did the Eisenhower administration contribute to the developing American involvement in Vietnam? Why were these decisions made?
Thesis: As a result of the Cold War, Vietnam was becoming increasingly communist, and the US began to finance a French colony war in Indochina. Even after this defeat, the US continued to financially aid the pro-Western Southern half of Vietnam, which would eventually lead to the Vietnam War in the 60’s.
