What are BZs
Treat anxiety and slows down the activity of the central nervous system
GABA is a neurotransmitter which relieves anxiety. BZs enhance the action of GABA by binding to the GABA receptor sites on the outside of receiving neurons which boosts their actions because a second channel is opened. This allows more Cl- ions to enter the neuron which makes it more resistant to excitation because there's less space for other neurotransmitters to bind. The brain's output of neurotransmitters is reduced and the person feels calmer. (e.g. reducing serotonin)
What are BBs
Science behind BBs
They bind to beta-receptors on the cells of the heart and other parts of the body that are usually stimulated during arousal. By blocking these receptors, they reverse the effect of stress hormones causing the heart to beat more slowly and with less force. The blood vessels do not contract as easily and therefore the blood pressure falls, there's less stress on the heart and they feel calmer.
Strength
Easy to use - little effort required
LOCKWOOD - strength
Studied 2000 musicians in orchestras and found that 27% use betablockers to make them calmer. They said that critics find that their music is better when they use these drugs
Negatives
Treat symptoms not the cause
Can get addicted
Have side effects
