How will the thickness of the involved skin play a role in the outcome of a burn
The thickness of the dermis in the injured area determines the speed with which the skin reepithelialises
Depth of injury relative to the skin thickness also predicts quality of the healing process
Skin on the dorsum of the finger, hand and wrist and inner arm represent relatively thin dermal areas. A deep 2nd degree butn at any of those levels is associated with delayed epithelialiation and poor quality restricting burn scar
Severity of a burn is determined by
Temperature of the source
Time in contact
Thickness of the skin
Area of the burn injury
What requires admission to the burn unit
Second degree burns in excess of 10% to 15% of body surface or third degree injuries as samll as 3%
