Bone Formation
Known as “Ossification”
Occurs in 4 situations:
1. The initial formation of an embryo
2. The growth of bones during infancy until adult size is reached
3. The remodeling of bone
4. Repair of fractures
Bone Fractures
A fracture is any break in a bone
Types of fractures include:
Partial
Complete
Closed (simple)
Open (compound)
Definition and Types
Partial Fracture
An incomplete break across the bone, such as a crack
Complete Fracture
A complete break across the bone. The bone is broken into two or more pieces
The fractured bone does not break through the skin
The broken ends of the bone protrude through the skin
Repair of Fractures
Repair of a fracture involves several steps:
1. First, phagocytes remove any dead bone tissue
2. Then, chondroblasts form fibrocartilage at the fracture site that bridges then broken ends of the bone
3. Next, the fibrocartilage is converted to spongy bone tissue by osteoblasts
4. Finally, bone remodeling occurs, in which dead portions of bone are absorbed by osteoclasts and spongy bone is converted to compact bone
