What is the difference between the following: gamete, seed, spore, and pollen.
Gamete: a mature haploid make our female germ cell
Seed: a flowering plants unit of reproduction, capable of developing into another plant
Spore: a minute one called reproductive unit capable of creating a new plant without sexual fusion
Pollen: microscopic grains discharged from the name part of a plant that can fertilize a female ovule
What are the four extant groups of gymnosperms?
Coniferophyta, cycadophyta, ginkophyta, gnetophyta
Describe the ovule producing structures of conifers vs flowers
Conifer: the ovule has a strong outer cover called an integument with a functional megaspore and a megasporangium surrounding the megaspore. The micropyle is a small opening at the top of the ovule. The megaspore becomes a female gametophyte and is fertilized by pollen, the make gametophyte, becoming a seed with a young sporophyte.
In flowers the ovule is located in the center of the plant in the ovary. The pollen/microsporangia is going in the anthers which pollinate the stigma and the ovaries.
