Definitive treatment?
adjustment of therapy after course is known.
i.e. switching from levofloxacin to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole after urine culture returns positive for sensitive E.Coli
Prophylactic treatment?
used to prevent infection.
i.e. tell UTI patient with recurrent symptoms to take one Bactrim following sex. Also used in surgical setting to prevent surgical site infections.
