What is the alkane series?
Methan
Ethane
Propane
Butane
Pentane
Hexane
Heptane
Octane
None
Decane
What is the general formula for alkanes
CnH2n+2
What are the physical properties of alkanes?explain.
1)Boiling point/melting point increases down the group. As size of alkane molecule increases, intermolecular forces of attraction gets stronger, more energy is needed to separate the molecules.
2)Viscosity increases down the group.Long carbon chains are more likely to get tangled together and flow less easily.
3)flammibilty decreases down the group. As size of molecule increases, molecules evaporate less easily.
4)smokiness of flame increases down the group.as percentage of carbon in alkane increases, flame becomes smokier.smoky flame is caused by incomplete combustion of carbon.
What reactions do alkane and alkenes undergo?
Alkane undergoes substitution reaction while alkene undergoes addition reaction and addition of steam. Both undergo combustion reactions.
What is the reaction alkane undergoes?what are the conditions needed?
-Substitution reaction is reaction in which atom or group if atoms is substituted by atoms of other elements.
-ultraviolet light/UV light need.
-the more reactive the halogen, the faster the rate of substitution.
