What are the advantages of food additives?
1. Salt, sugar and honey have been used to preserve and enhance the flavour of food since ancient times.
2. Herbs and spices, which are aromatic parts of plants are also used for adding colours and flavours to food.
What are the disadvantages of food additives?
Prolonged consumption of large amounts of certain food additives may cause health effects.
1. Sodium nitrate has been linked to colorectal cancer.
2. Increased hyperactivity in children which is linked to certain artificial colourings.
3. Allergic reactions may also be caused by sulphite-containing preservatives found in canned fruit and vegetables.
