Contact Dermatitis

It's produced by primary iritants and allergic materials coming into contact with skin

Etiology of Contact Dermatitis

1. Primary irritant – substance such as lime, nitric acid and or sulphuric acid. This will produce inflammation on first contact with skin.


2. Allergic sensitizes – such as flour or dies


3. Special characteristics – such as clothing, occupation, cosmetics, plant, household and medicine

Clinical Manifestation of Contact Dermatitis

1. Acute Contact Dermatitis


- erythema and edema or discrete or grouped vesicles progressing weeping with or without papules- itching or burning


2. Chronic Contact Dermatitis


- may have papules, scaling or crusted which later lead to lichnifications


3. Sub acute Contact Dermatitis


- between the acute and chronic

Treatment of Contact Dermatitis

1. Remove the causes


2. Local


i. Acute – lotion


ii. Sub acute – cream


iii. Chronic – ointment
