Parallel Transmission

Occurs when a number of bits are sent simultaneously.

Serial Transmission

Occurs when bits are sent one by one along the data channel.

Simplex

Data can only be sent in one direction.

Half Duplex

Data can be sent in both directions, but only on direction at a time.

Full Duplex

Data can be sent in both directions at the same time.

Multiplexing

Where several independent data sources are combined to be sent along a single route to a single destination.

Switch

Connects segments of a network together.

Switching

prevents data from being sent to all parts of the network.

Router

A device which holds the addresses of the computers on a network and can direct data to the correct computer.

Data Collision

Occurs when two sets of data are detected on the network simultaneously.

Protocol

A set of rules which specifies how data is transmitted across a network.
