Twisted Pair Cabling

Balanced pair operation

-Two wires w/equal and opposite signals

-Transmit+, transmit- / receive+, receive-

Twisted cabling keeps a single wire constantly moving away from interference.

The opposite signals are compared at the end.

Pairs in the same cable have different twist rates.

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cable Categories

Category 3 Cable

10BASE-T

-10 Mbps transmission speed

Maximum length of 100 m

Category 5 Cable

100BASE-TX

1000BASE-T

-100 Mbps

Maximum length of 100 m

Reduces some crosstalk and noise but not confined in foil to avoid interference.

Category 5e (enhanced) Cable

100BASE-TX

1000BASE-T

1Gb

Maximum length of 100m

Aims to reduce crosstalk and interference

Category 6 Cable

10GBASE-T

10 Gbps

Maximum length - 55m

More tightly wound than Cat5 and have foil wrap or shielding to prevent crosstalk and interference.

Category 6a (augmented) Cable

10GBASE-T

10 Gbps

Maximum length - 100m

Twisted tighter than Cat6

Operates at 500mhz allowing for longer lengths

Added shielding built into cable structure.

Plenum-Rated Cabling

Plenum - crawl space above or below

Traditional cable jacket is made of PVC

Fire-rated cable jacket

-Fluorinated ethylene polymer (FEP) or low-smoke PVC

Plenum-rated cables may not be as flexible as traditional jacket

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)

Unshielded Twisted Pair Cables are more common and consist of two twisted wires that allows for reduction in noise. Unshielded cables do not require a grounding cable and are relatively easy to install, are smaller, lighter, and more flexible. However, they do not allow for the same capabilities as shielded pair cables

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Cable

Shielded Twisted Pair Cables are cables that have been twisted together and enclosed in some sort of shield, whether it be foil or mesh. These shields protect the wires from electromagnetic interference. Shielded cables are particularly adept at eliminating most crosstalk. Another key difference between shielded and unshielded is that shielded cables do require a ground. Although they can require a bit more finesse with installation, they provide high rates of data transmission.

T568A and T568B Termination

RJ-45 connector standard 8-pin

T567A used for horizontal cabling

Cannot terminate one end T568A on one end and T568B on the other.

568A and 568B Termination

Coaxial Cable

RG-6 used in TV/digital cable

High-speed Internet over cable

RG-59 used as patch cables

Not designed for long distances
