Cat 5 |
Designed for 100 Mbps Max length 100m |
Cat 5e |
Enhanced to handle 1000 Mbps Max length of 100m |
Cat 6 |
Supports 1000 Mbps at 100m segments; 10 Gbps networks up to 55 meter segments. |
Cat 6a |
Supports 10 Gbps at 100m segments. |
Cat 6e |
Nonstandard term for cat 6 or cat 6a. |
Cat 7 |
Supports 10 Gbps networks at 100 m segments; shielding for individual wire pairs reduces crosstalk and noise problems. Not TIA/EIA standard. |

What are two standards for connecting an RJ-45 connector? What's difference? |
T568A and T568B.
Don't need to follow any standard as long as you use same pairings on each end of cable. It makes it easier if a standard is chosen.
T568A Pin 1 green stripe Pin 2 green Pin 3 Orange stripe Pin 4 blue Pin 5 blue stripe Pin 6 Orange Pin 7 brown stripe Pin 8 brown
T568B Pin 1 orange stripe Pin 2 Orange Pin 3 green stripe Pin 4 blue Pin 5 blue stripe Pin 6 green Pin 7 brown stripe Pin 8 brown |
Pins 4, 5, 7, and 8 are the same for both standards. |

Describe fiber optic cable |
Uses light instead of electricity. It's immune to electrical problems such as lightning, short circuits, and static. Fiber optic signals travel 2000 meters or more. They are half-duplex, which means data flows only 1 way so they need 2 cables for installation. |
What are the two types of fiber optic cables? |
Multimode and Singlemode
Multimode transmits multiple light signals at same time, and has standards like 1000 Base SX 10G base S-R. Used for short distances and is slower. It runs at 10, 100, 1000, and some at 10,000 Mbps. They generally have max length of 600 meters.
Singlemode used for long distances and is faster than multimode. Runs at 100 Tbps with max length of 100 miles. |
What connectors are used with fiber optic cables? |
ST,SC, and LC. Newer connectors like LC are designed to support 2 fiber cables in 1 connector. |
What are the 2 basic types of coax cables? Describe them. |
RG-59 and RG-6
Both standards are measured by impedance, which is measured in ohms. Both have a 75-ohm impedance and are used by both TV.
RG-59 is thinner and doesn't carry data quite as far as 6. |
What 2 types of coax cable connectors? |
BNC and F connectors |
Describe coaxial cable |
Primarily used for cable modems and satellite connections. Consist of a center cable core surrounded by insulation. This is covered with a shield of braided cable.
The center core carries signal. The shield eliminates outside interference. The entire cable is then surrounded by a protective insulating cover. Coax cables are rated using an RG name.
Can top 100 Mbps in some cases, but using splitters negatively effects signal quality, lowering speeds. |

What is a 110 block in regards to networking? |
Also called a 110-punchdown block. It is the most common type of patch panel used today. UTP cables connect to a 110 block using a punchdown tool. |
