What is a community?
People and the relationships that emerge among them as they develop and use in common some agencies and institutions and share a physical environment.
What does 'public' mean?
Not private, open to or concerning the people as a whole. Open and observable, not secret or hidden. Supported and operated by the government of a state. Accessible to all.
What does 'health' mean?
Health is more than the absence of disease, it is the presence of physical, mental, emotional, social, economic, and spiritual well being.
What is the WHO definition of health?
"a state of complete physyical, mental, and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
The WHO definition of health should be thought of as an ideal state of health, that very few of us ever see!
What is wellness?
Wellness is a dynamic state that is influenecd by external and internal variables. It includes the definition of health and incorporates the capacity to develop a persons potential to lead a fulfilling and productive life, one that can be measured in terms of quality of life.
What is public health?
what members of a society do collectively to ensure that conditions exist in which people can be healthy.

The vision int the US is to have helathy people in healthy communities (aka Healthy People 2010).

Their mission in the US is to promote physical and mental health, as well as preventing disease, injury, and disability.

It is multidisciplinary, population-focused, community oridented, and health promotoion and disease prevention focused.
What does public health include?
Organized community efforts for the
Sanitation of the environment, and
Control of communicable infections, the
Education of the individual in personal hygiene, and the
Organization of medical and nursing services for the
Early diagnosis and Preventive treatment of disease
What is the wellness/illness continuum?
There is a sliding scale between total disability/death all the way to optimal health. At any given time, a person can be placed at some point on this continuum!
Is wellness an absolute or relative concept?
relative.

example: illness is a state of being relatively unhealthy.
Who does the Wellness/Illness Continuum apply to?
not just individuals, but also families and communities.
The health of indivudals, groups, and families move back and forth along the continuum throughout life.
