What is excess air?

A quantity of air,that is greater than what is required for combustion.

Why is excess air necessary?

To ensure the fuel will have enough oxygen so it will be completely burned, and to ensure the heat exchanger will not be overheated to the point of destruction.

What should the volume of excess air be?

40% times the volume of gas being supplied.
