Male Deficit vs. Alternative Paths Model
The Male Deficit Model states that men are not as able or willing to disclose personal information or emotion and that they can't communicate as well as women.
The Alternative Paths Model states that men are not incapable of disclosing, but rather socialized to feel as though they aren't allowed. It also states that men do express themselves, but in a way that's just different.

Men express more by activity than dialogue.
Women emphasize dialogue more and expect everything to be reciprocated.
How men's and women's disclosure may differ.
Men tend to disclose to other men, but will occasionally disclose to women. Men avoid appearing vulnerable to maintain their competitive edge and masculinity.
Women self disclose more than men and to both genders. It's more socially accepted.
How homophobia may influence men's expression of friendship (Kimmel).

Females rate affective higher and look for it and Males rate instrumental higher and look for it.
Men actually rated affective skills higher in cross-sex than in same-sex and women didn't differ. Women rated instrumental skills higher in cross-sex than in same-sex and men didn't differ.
LGBT Romantic Relationships: Findings regarding sexual communication among lesbians and gays (Holmburg and Blair).
States that there is very little difference. Gays/Lesbians just tend to have a bit more humor involved and don't have to express as much, because they understand each other in a different way.
LGBT Romantic Relationships: Findings regarding interpersonal contact, emotional and sexual intimacy, and relationship satisfaction for gays and lesbians after breakups (Lunnutti and Cameron).
They expressed a high degree of interpersonal satisfaction, a moderate degree of emotional intimacy, and lower sexual intimacy.
How domestic abuse is a communication phenomenon.
It just is. People don't know how to talk about it and with whom, because it's such an emotional, sensitive and serious topic.
Domestic Abuse: Findings about domestic abuse survivor's storytelling behaviors of empowerment and disempowerment (Montealbano-Phelps).
Disempowerment displayed issues with a conformity to

of victimization.
Empowerment displayed issues on the “future story,” context, persuasion, and believability.
