Intercultural Communication
Communication between individuals or groups from different co-cultures that exist within the same cultures.
The growth of international business, transnational telecommunication, and government/military work promoted this type of research.
Hofstede's Cultural Dialectics Theory. First Dialectic.
1) High Power Distance vs. Low Power Distance.
High Power Distance: Cultures view power as a fact of life and emphasize its coercive nature.

Low Power Distance: Cultures believe power should be used only when legitimate, it's useful for employees to question bosses, citizens to question government, etc...

2) Individualistic vs. Collectivist
Individualistic: Regards each person as distinct.

Collectivist: Regards people as connected to one another. Group oriented.

3) Low Context vs High Context
Low Context: Behaviors and beliefs need to be spelled out explicitly so newcomers know how to behave.

High Context: Since people have had a close connection over years, behaviors and beliefs don't need to be made explicitly known.

4) Masculine vs. Feminine
Masculine: Aggressiveness, ambition, and competition are emphasized and valued. Material success is seen as important.

Feminine: Involves a lot of compromise and is more communal. Relationships are emphasized and modesty is important.
Ting-Toomey's Face Negotiation Theory
Each culture has its type of face maintenance, which determines its type of conflict management.
Involves efforts to prevent events that impair their public image or cause the some sort of vulnerability.
Findings regarding the relationships between Individualistic/Collectivist and Masculine/Feminine in terms of Face Negotiation.
States that the more Individualistic cultures often display masculine qualities and that collectivist cultures often display feminine qualities.
Also states that the individualistic/masculine cultures also display competitive qualities. However, the collectivist/feminist cultures do not necessarily display harmonious qualities.
