Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA)
Trade Name: Asprin Bayer
Actions: Decrease platelet aggregation
Indications: S&S of chest pain associated with an AMI (acute myocardial infarction)
Contraindications: Already taken ASA in last 24 hours, Known allergy, Known bleeding disorder
Dosage: 81mg x 4 chewable baby Asprin for a total of 324mg
Side Effects: Heart burn, Nausea/vomiting
Activated Charcoal (Super Char)
Trade name: Actidose-Aqua
Actions: absorbs toxins by chemical binding and prevents gastrointenstinal binding
Indications: Ingested poisons
Contraindications: AMS, has swallowed acids/alkalis, Unable to swallow
Dosage: 1g per kg of Pt's weight
Side Effects: Vomiting, If Pt does vomit re-administer dose
Metered Dose Inhaler
Trade Names: Proventil, Ventolin, Combivent
Actions: Bronchiole dilation
Indications: S&S of respiratory difficulty
Contraindications: Not able to follow commands, Maximum dose already taken
Dosage: Each MDI is specific to Pt, Usual dose if 2 puffs every 4 hours
Side Effects: Increase in heart rate, Tremors, Dry mouth, Nausea/vomiting
Epinephrine
Trade Name: Epi-Pen
Actions: Vasoconstriction, Bronchiole dilation
Indications: Anaphylaxis with respiratory distress
Contraindications: None in a life threatening situation
Dosage: Adult - 0.3mg of 1/1000, Children - 0.15mg of 1/1000, May repeat as necessary
Side Effects: Tachycardia, Dizziness, Excitability, Headache, Chest pain
Nitroglycerine
Trade Names: Nitrostat, Nitrobid
Actions: Dilates coronary and systemic blood vessels
Indications: S&S of cardiac related chest pain
Contraindications: Systolic blood pressure below 100 mmHg, Head injury, Infant or child, Maximum dose taken for this episode of pain, Taken Viagra in last 12 hours
Dosage: 0.4mg of NTG spray or tablet every 3-5 minutes up to 3 doses IF: Pt does not experience relief of chest pain and systolic BP remains above 100 mmHg. This dose must include doses Pt took prior to arrival for this episode
Side Effects: Headache, Drop in BP, Increase in HR
Oral Glucose
Trade Name: Glutose, Insta-Glucose
Actions: Increases circulating blood sugar level
Indications: AMS, History of Diabetes
Contraindications: Unresponsive, Unable to swallow
Dosage: One tube
Side Effects: No side effects when administered properly
