automatic vs. controlled
automatic: mental processes are those that require little or no mental effort
controlled: mental processes are those that require mental effort |
Characteristics of Automatic Processes
1. fast
2. well practiced 3. unavailable to consciousness 4. occur w/out intention 5. do not require 'mental resources' e.g. walking, driving to school, recognition of familiar words |
Characteristics of Controlled Processes
1. slow
2. not well practiced 3. conscious 4. require intention 5. require resources e.g. walking through an obstacle course, driving in London Square, reading of unfamiliar words |
