Anticipatory socialization (p. 120)
Socialization processes that occur before and individual actually enters an organization. Encompasses both socialization to an occupation and socialization to an organization.

-There are several aspects: learning about work in general, learning about a particular occupation, and learning about a particular organization.

-Involves ideas about the nature of specific careers and occupations.
Asking questions about the organization during the interview (p. 128)
The interview as an information-gathering tool.

-Provides a glimpse of a possible future employer.

-Satisfaction with the interview is a good predictor of the acceptance of second interview
Socialization process (p. 120)
-Anticipatory socialization: Socialization processes that occur before and individual actually enters an organization. Encompasses both socialization to an occupation and socialization to an organization.

-Encounter: Sense-making stage that occurs when a new employee enters and organization. The newcomer must let go of old roles and values in adapting to the expectations of the new organization.

-Metamorphosis: The state reached at the "completion" of the socialization process. The new employee is now accepted as an organizational insider.
Glass ceiling
A concept used to describe a barrier so subtle that it is transparent, yet so strong that it prevents women and minorities from moving up in the management hierarchy.
Mentor
An experienced, productive manager who relates well to a less-experienced employee and facilitates her or his professional and personal development for the benefit of that individual and the organization.
Mommy Track
A work arrangement for women who want to work and have a family that involves flexible hours and family support in exchange for fewer opportunities for advancement.
Emotional intelligence
Suggests that some people are better at understanding and managing emotional content in the workplace.
