Also believed to be Apollo slaying the python at Delphi



What did Cadmus do once he killed the Dragon?

Athena told him to plant half of the Dragon's teeth in the field




Fierce soldiers (Spartoi) began to rise from the field and fight each other.




the five surviving soldiers made peace and helped Cadmus build the city Thebes

Dionysus vs. Pentheus

Dionysus and Pentheus are cousins




When Dionysus returns to Thebes, Pentheus makes fun of his looks and behavior (long hair and relaxed?)




The cult of Dionysus was growing in Thebes including pentheus' mother Agave







What did Pentheus do to spy on Dionysus?

He dresses up as a woman and went to his camp




The Bacchae caught Pentheus watching them but Dionysus made Bacchae think he was an animal




The Bacchae including his mother Agave, tear Pentheus to pieces.





Why did Agave leave Thebes after killing Pentheus (her son)

She was not polluted because of the murder and would pollute others if she stays

Tiresias's tragedy

- He saw snakes copulating and wounded them. as a result he was turned into a female


- Hera and Zeus asked him if men or women enjoyed sex better


- Tiresias said women enjoy it far more (Zeus's side)


- Hera gets angry and blinds him but Zeus gives him the power of prophecies

Cadmus's Tragedy

Grandfather of Pentheus




Accepts Dionysus only because he is a god




Dionysus gets upset at this and turns Cadmus into a snake/serpent

Atreus vs Thyestes

- Thyestes commits adultery with wife of Atreus

- Atreus later invites Thyestes back for dinner to make peace but feeds Thyestes his children



- The head, hands and feet of the children shown on a platter to Thyestes

How did Thyestes get revenge on Atreus?

He was told by and oracle that if he has a son with his daughter(Pelopia), the son (Aegisthus) will one day kill Atreus




He gets his daughter pregnant and leaves her with a sword for the child




Atreus then marries Pelopia not knowing it is his niece and raises the Child

How did Aegisthus kill Atreus?

Atreus' other sons (Agamemnon & Menalaus) went to find Thyestes and bring him back




Atreus has Aegisthus go to execute Thyestes but finds out that Thyestes is his father because of the sword.




Aegisthus then kills Atreus and Thyestes becomes king on Mycenae
