Pre clinical

This is when the drug is tested on cells in a lab, to see if it can have the required effects, as well as check for any side effects

First stage

This checks if the medicine can work in a whole body, so is tested on animals

Second stage

Tested in a small clinical trial, on a small number of healthy people, to check it is safe with limited side effects

Final stage
