Anisocytosis
.
Erythrocytes that retain small, round nuclear fragments, dark staining intracellular bodies “Mosby’s”
Basophilic nuclear remnants seen in young erythrocytes during the response to anemia “Hendrix”
Are small, often singular, deeply basophilic nuclear remnants that are occasionally seen on normal blood films “McCurnin”
found on Red blood Cells
Howell-Jolly Bodies
What do Howell-Jolly Bodies indicate?
Noted in regenerative anemia's and splenic disorders
In 1% of feline and equine RBC’s
May be seen after the removal of the spleen
What are Dohle Bodies?
Are small, pale bluish-gray irregular inclusions in the cytoplasm that usually indicate mild toxemia “McCurnin”
Appear as small, gray-blue cytoplasmic inclusions, indicative of mild toxemia “Mosby”
Small angular, blue-gray granules “Hendrix
What cells do you find Dohle Bodies on?
Neutrophils
What do Dohle Bodies indicate?
Toxicity
Mild toxemia
Should be recorded because it signifies rapid replication and may be seen in association with infections
More evident with feline illnesses
May be indicative of bacterial infections in some species
What are Heinz Bodies?
Denatured hemoglobin that has fused to the RBC membrane and appear as refractile projections from the RBC membrane with NMB stain appear as distinct, darkly staining inclusions protruding from the cell surface. “McCurnin”
Round structures representing denatured hemoglobin, caused by certain oxidant drugs or chemicals. “Hendrix”
Small, round areas of denatured Hb attached to the cell membrane “Mosby”
What cell do you find Heinz bodies on?
RBC’s
What do Heinz bodies indicate?
Oxidant drugs,
Lymphosarcoma
Hyperthyroidism
Diabetes mellitus in cats
Normal up to 5% of RBC’s of cats
How are NRBC's recorded?
As the number of NRBC’s per 100 WBC’s
Remember to correct the WBC count if more than 10 NRBC’s per 100 WBC’s are found.
How is anisocytosis recorded?
Graded as mild, moderate, or marked.
