Taxonomy

Orderly classification and grouping of organisms into categories

Taxa- categories

Family

"Clan", has an "-aceae" ending

Species

Human first name, "aureus"

When species not identified "sp." Singular "spp." Plural

Eukaryotes

Fungi, algae, protozoa, animal cells, plant cells. Contain a nucleus that contains DNA and are complex. Cells don't have a cell wall, have plasma membrane.

Prokaryotes

Bacteria, no membrane bound nucleus. DNA is a single circular chromosome. Have both cell plasma membrane and cell wall.

G+ cell wall

Very thick peptidoglycan layer, consists of cross-linked chains of glycan, also contain teichoic acid and lipoteichoic acid.

The crystal violet stain is absorbed by the peptidoglycan

G- cell wall

Two layer of cell wall, inner peptidoglycan layer, outer layer consists of proteins, phospholipids, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)

Crystal violet is washed away and safranin is absorbed
