Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

A greenhouse gas in the Earth's atmosphere. It occurs naturally and is produced by human activities such as burning fossil fuels.

Climate Change

A pattern of change in global or regional climate such as average temperature and rainfall, or extreme weather events. Global warming is an aspect of climate change.

Fossil fuels

Natural resources such as coal, oil and natural gas. Formed in the Earth over millions of years from the remains of living organisms and produce carbon dioxide when burnt.

Global average temperature

The mean surface temperature of the Earth.

Global warming

The steady rise in global average temperature in recent decades. Experts believe this is largely caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

Greenhouse gases

Natural and industrial gases that trap heat from the Earth and warm the Earth's surface.

Greenhouse effect

The effect of certain gases to trap the Earth's heat within the atmosphere rather than letting it escape into space.
