What is the barbette assembly, what does it house?

The barbette assembly is designed to protect multiple subsystems from the elements. Its houses the Environmental control group, pneumatic storage bottles + compressor, and transmitter assembly.

Describe the ECG

Provides the means to control the temperature and humidity throughout the system. Consists of a blower heat exchanger, a coolant pump assembly, and electronic subassembly, a liquid to heat exchanger, a radome heater assembly, and a waveguide air dryer assembly.

Describe pneumatic storage bottles and compressor

The gun drives pneumatic pressure is supplied from these bottles. Their pressure being 3150PSI, the compressor starts up to fill them if the pressure drops below 2700PSI.

Describe transmitter Assembly

Generates the RF pulses for the search and track radar. The Klystron makes use of the ships supply 440v 60HZ and the signal generated by the RF signal generator.

Describe EOSS and PTI

The phalanx thermal imager is a forward looking infrared camera which is mounted on a stabilization servo (EOSS). It is inertially stabilised by two axis pedestals which provide steering corrections for the aiming the PTI. Sends digital video signals over a fibre optic line to the automatic video tracker in the VME chassis of the LCS.

Describe fire control radar/servo assembly

Consists of a J-band track antenna, a transceiver, a microwave receiver, single processor units and four search antennae.

Describe the drive train/elevation system

Key points: 1. 28VDC signal sent from LCP to disengage breaks.

2. 205V 60HZ converted to dc to drive the dc motors.

3. Mount has stow pins to lock the axis in place. Can be actuated electronically and also manually.

4. Can be driven manually if needed

Describe 20mm Gun system

Six 20mm vulcan barrels, fires up to 4500 rounds per minute. The drum has capacity to hold 1580 rounds which are transferred from the drum to the gun via the conveyer system when firing.

Descride ELX

This is a cabinet located FWD of the barbette and contains the electronics required to operate CIWS. It is made up of 12 removable drawers. 2A1 to 2A12.

Describe 2A1

Elevation servo electronics assembly. Controls the voltage sent to the elevation motor.

Describe 2A2

Servo interface test control unit: this makes up the BITE for running tests on CIWS. Made up of 13 cards.

Describe 2A3

Target detection processor: assess targets based on targey engagement criteria.

2A4

Train servo electronics assembly: controls the voltage sent to the train motor.

Describe 2A5

Gun control unit: equipped with a two position key switch for controlling the firing circuit. Isolates current which would pass through the breech bolt. Also has a maintenance command switch, used after misfire of jam to rotate the gun in order to remove the rounds remaining in the gun.

Describe 2A6

Left power supply and control group: controls the distribution of power for 115 60HZ and below

Describe 2A7

Radar section processor: this converts any analogue signals from the radar in order to be used as tracks by the GCU.

Describe 2A8

Weapon control group: the WCG processes the antenna position, LCS/RCS commands, mount position and test functions which then become outputs to other systems. Computer functions are disabled by the WCGs voltage sensors if a voltage drop of 5% or more is detected. It's primary functions are computing, data processing and data output to the computer.

Describe 2A9

Search/Track servo: controls the rotational speed of the search radar and minor movements of the track radar.

Describe 2A10

Signal generator: generates signals to feed to the Klystron in order to produce specific frequencies.

Describe 2A11

Radar servo interface: interface between the search/track servo and the WCG. Allows for the small movement of the track radar servo and controls the 90 rpm rotation.

Describe 2A12

Right power supply and control group: houses the larger circuit breakers for the right side of the barbette equipment. This includes the Klystron and other transmitting equipment. This panel also houses a test switch which on activation will shut off the system for 10 seconds and test voltages as it boots back up.

Describe heat exchanger

Located on the left side of the ELX, it acts as a heat sink for the environmental control group.
