Missouri Compromise

California could be a free state as long as the North obeyed the Fugitive Slave Law.

Fugitive Slave Law of 1850
|
Dred Scott, a slave who moved with his owner to free territory, asked for freedom and Supreme Court denied it stating slaves were property and US citizens had the right to move anywhere.

In 1854, Congress passed this law which allowed Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery or not.

In 1859, a group of men took control of a building in Harpers Ferry, VA and stole weapons hoping to start a rebellion. It was led by John Brown: he and his men were arrested.
