Civil Partnership Act 2004

Same sex couples to formalize their relationship. Must have the capacity to do so (have to be the same sex) and comply with legal formalities.

Ending Civil Partnerships

Dissolution order s44 CPA 2004 or nullity order ss49-54. Adultery cannot be used as basis. Not consummating the marriage will not make it voidable neither will one party having an STI

Separation order

Under s56 CPA 2004 allows parties to live separately without ending civil partnership (equivalent of judicial separation)

Financial remedies

Under s72 and Schs 5&6 CPA 2004 equivalent of marriages.

Marriage (Same sex couples) Act 2013

Civil partners who wish to covert their relationship into a marriage can do so under the Marriage of same sex couples (conversion of civil partnerships) regulations 2014. Must sign a conversion to marriage declaration in presence of a registrar
