System unit
A case it contains electronic components of the computer used to process data
Motherboard
Systemboard, main circuit board of the system unit
Chip
A small piece of semi conducting material on which integrated circuits are etched
CPU
Central processing unit, interprets and carries out the basic instructions that operate a computer
Multicore processor
A chip with two or more separate processor cores
Control unit
The component of the processor that directs and coordinates most operations in the computer
ALU
Arithmetic logic unit, component of the processor, performs arithmetic, comparison, and other operations
System clock
Small quartz crystal circuit that controls the timing of all computer operations
Clock speed
The pace of the system clock
Binary system
A number system that has just two unique digits, zero and one, called bits
Bit
Binary digit, smallest unit of data the computer can process
Byte
When eight bits are grouped together as a unit
Memory
Electronic components in a computer that store instructions waiting to be executed and data needed by those instructions
Volatile memory
When the power to resolve it loses its contents
Non-volatile memory
Does not lose contents when power is lost
RAM memory
Random access memory, consists of memory chips that can be read from and written to buy the processor and other devices
ROM Memory
Read only memory, memory chips store impermanent data and instructions
Memory module
A small circuit board
Memory slot
On the motherboard holds memory modules
Cache
Area of memory that stores the contents of frequently used data or instructions
L1 Cache
Billed directly interprocessor ranges from 8 kB to 128 kB
L2 Cache
Slightly slower than L1 but holds more up to 64 MB to 16 MB
ASCII
American Standard code information interchange
Flash memory
A type of nonvolatile memory that can be erased and rewritten
CMOS
Complementary metal oxide semi conductor, battery
Access time
The amount of time it takes the processor to read data, instructions, and information from memory
Nanosecond
1 billionth of a second
Expansion slot
Socket on the motherboard that can hold an adapter card
Adapter card
Expansion card, a circuit board that enhances functions of a component of the system
Flash memory
A type of nonvolatile memory that can be erased electronically or rewritten
Peripheral
A device that connects to the system and is controlled by the processor
Video card
Graphics card, converts computer output to a video signal that travels the cable to a monitor, which displays an image on screen
Soundcard
Enhances the sound generating capabilities on a computer
Hub
Allows many devices to be connected
Graphics card
Converts computer output into video signal that travels the cable to a monitor, which displays an image on screen
Memory card
A removable flash memory device
Port
The point at which a peripheral attaches to a system unit
USB port
Universal serial bus, can connect up to 127 different peripherals together at once
FireWire port
Similar to USB port
SCSI port
Allows you to attach SCSI peripherals
Porch replicator
An external device that provides connection to peripherals through ports built into the device
Docking station
An external device that attaches to a mobile computer or device
Bus
Allows the various devices both inside and attached to the system unit to communicate with each other
System bus
Front side bus, is part of the motherboard and connects the processor to main memory
Backside bus
Connect the processor to cache
Expansion bus
Allows processor to communicate with peripherals
Bay
An opening inside the system unit in which you can install additional equipment
Drive bay
Rectangular opening that typically holds disk drives
Power supply
The components of the system unit that converts AC power to DC power
