1-10. When Publius Clodius had decided to disturb the republic with every crime in the praetorship, and saw that the elections had been dragged out in the previous year, in such a way that he would not be able to carry out the praetorship for many months he was not watchful of the rank of honour as other people were, but he wanted to escape Lucius Paulus as a colleague, a citizen of singular virtue, and he was looking for a whole year in order to break apart the republic, suddenly he abandoned his year and transferred himself into the next year not (as happens) by some religious reason but in order to have, what he himself was saying, in order to carry out the praetorship that is in order to overthrow the republic, in order to have a full whole year. |
