Economic Reforms

1978 Chinese Government wanted to increase the standard of living by moving away from a command economy to a more market based one


The opened China up to FDI and International Trade


1980s a number of special economic zones were established in the South


3 of which were in Guangdong


4 year slater 14 coastal cities were awarded the same status , among them was Guangdong's largest city, Guangzhou

Pearl River Delta

1985 China extended it's open coastal area by creating 5 more economic zones


One of which is the Pearl River Delta (PRD) and is the power house of China's export led industrial growth


PRD became prosperous from making clothing, shoes, electronic equipment and toys.


China produces 1/2 worlds microwaves and clothes, 2/3 of the world's shoes and 1/3 of all mobile phones

However

Globalisation has only impacted 30% of the country, mostly costal regions.


Massive amounts of atmospheric pollution from the manufacturing.


People who die as a result of respiratory diseases die at the age of 50 in China


To conclude

Private sector generates 70% of China's GDP


Economy is growing at 10% a year


It's fuel the closing of the development gap economically, however socially and environmentally it is questionable
