Atomic Number

This is the number of protons in an atom. It is written as a subscript on the bottom left of the symbol

Element

Asubstance made up of only one type of atom

Compound

Asubstance made up of atoms of at least two different types, chemically bondedin a fixed ratio

Molecule

Twoor more atoms (of either element or compound) bonded together in a fixednumber, e.g. water, always one hydrogen and two oxygen

Crystal Lattice

Atomsor ions bonded together in a fixed ratio but not a fixed number - Usually verylarge number, e.g. Salts, copper sulphate, metals, carbon, diamond

Ion

Atomor group of atoms that have either gained or lost electrons and therefore havea positive or negative

Mass Number

Thenumber of Protons and Neutrons in an atom. Written on the top, left of a symbol

Relative Atomic Mass

The average mass number of all the naturallyoccurring isotopes of an element

Isotope

Sameelement but has a different number of neutrons, therefore different mass number
