What are the two types of chemical compounds? |
Ionic compounds and Molecular/Covalent compounds |
Three characteristics of Ionic Compounds |
High melting point a (500-2000°C) Good conductors of electricity when molten or in solution Ions make up their basic structural unit |
Four characteristics of Molecular compounds |
LOwer melting points Usually gasses liquids or low Melting point Solids Don't conduct electricity when molten Molecules are their basic structural unit |
Define Chemical Bond |
The attractive force that holds two atoms together in a more complex unit |
Ionic bond |
Transfer of electrons |
Ionic compound |
Compound in which ionic bonds are present |
Covalent bond |
Sharing of electrons |
Molecular compound |
Compound In which covalent bonds are present |
What are the two fundamental concepts in understanding the ionic and molecular bond model? |
Not all electrons participate in bonding. The ones that do are called Valence Electrons. Certain arrangements of atoms are more stable than others and this is explained by the Octet rule. |
What are valence electrons |
An electron in the outermost electron shell of a representative or noble gas element |
In representative and noble gas elements, which subshells will the valence electrons be found? |
S or p subshells |
Lewis symbols are also called |
Electron dot structures |
Lewis symbols |
Chemical symbol of an element surrounded by dots. Dots equal number of valence electrons |
On the periodic table what are groups |
Column/downward |
Periods |
Row/horizontal |
Maximum number of valence electrons for any element |
8 Only noble gases (besides Helium) have the Max of 8 electrons |
For representative elements, the number of Valence electrons is the same as the Roman Numeral periodic gable group number. Oxygen and sulfur are group VIA. How many dots would be on their Lewis symbols? |
6 |
Representative elements in the same group of the periodic table hVe the same number of.... |
Valence electrons |
