Alloy

a mixture made of two or more elements that has the properties of metal. At least one of the elements is a metal.

How do the properties of metals and alloys compare?

Alloys are used much more than pure metals because they are generally stronger and less likely to react with air or water like metals are.

Properties of Metals

It's hard and shiny, at room temperature they are solid except for mercury, they can conduct electricity, they are ductile and malleable.

Ductile

Can be drawn out into a thin wire. For example, copper made into wire carries electric current to the outlets in your home.

Malleable

Can be hammered into a sheet. For example, aluminum rolled flat makes aluminum foil.

Properties of Alloys

when combined with metals they make things much stronger and last longer and don't react to water or air. They don't bend or loose their pointy blade as fast when used to make swords.

How are alloys made?

By melting metals and mixing them together in carefully measured amounts.


Steel

an alloy of iron with other elements. Not all steels are alike. Their properties depend on which elements are added to iron and in what amounts. Some are stronger than others and have many uses.

Alloys Used for:

Steel is an alloy that is used for its strength, hardness and resistance to corrosion. other alloys are used to make items like plumbing materials, sprinkler systems, tableware, doorknobs, and dentists in a mixture to fill in cavities.
