What makes a solution? |
A solution's solvent & solute MUST have similar intermolecular forces;
THAT MEANS both must be polar substances OR both must be nonpolar. CANNOT be polar + nonpolar; will not form a solution. |

Miscible |
Two pure liquids which are mutually soluble & blend into one homogeneous phase with no layering effects. Density is unimportant. |

The bulb can shine bright, dim, or not at all. Acids, bases, and salts can be bright or dim. No light = other.
Why does this occur (light)? The ions in the solution are free to move around and conduct electricity. |

What is a solution |
It is a homogeneous mixture containing both solvent and solute.
SOLVENT: A dissolving medium and is present in greater amounts. Max of 1 solvent per solution.
SOLUTE: Component that is dissolved and is present in lesser amounts |

Ionic Compounds |
Their ions become mobile when the compound is melted or dissolved in water |

Non-Polar Covalent compounds |
Are not able to conduct electricity because no ions are present even if the material is melted or dissolved.
They are non-electrolytes |

Polar Covalent compounds |
*Such as an acid
Have no ions unless dissolved in a polar solvent, such as water, which will pull the molecules apart into ions. |

Titration Procedure |
The volume of a solution with known molarity is titrated against a volume of solution with unknown molarity. Commonly used for acid-base reactions OUR EXPERIMENT To neutralize the base with the acid to a pH of lower than 8-10. |

Immiscible |
Two liquids that are insoluble to each other. Even after being stirred there is a layer between the two; the denser liquid is on the bottom. |
