what is an acid?
acid is a compound that contains one or moe hydrogen atoms and produces hyrdrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.
When naming an acid, what can you consider?
When naming an acid, you can consider the acid to consist of an anion combined with as many hydrogen ions as are needed to make the molecule electrically neutral.
What is the first rule for naming an acid? (ide)
When the name of the anion (X) ends in -ide, the acid name begins with the prefix hydro-. The stem of the anion has the suffic -ic and is followed by the word acid. Example is hydrocloric acid
What is the second rule in naming an acid? (ite)
When the anion name ends in -ite, the acid name is the stem of the anion with the suffix -ous, followed by the words acid. Thsu H2SO3 is names sulfurous acid.
What is the third rule in naming an acid (ate)?
When the anion name ends in -ate, the acid name is the stem of the anion with the suffix -ic followed by the word acid. Thus HNO3 is named nitric acid.
What is a base?
a base is an ionic compound that produces hydroxide ions when dissolved in water.
How are bases named?
Bases are names the same way as other ionic compounds, the name of the cation is followed by the name of the anion.
What is the procedure for naming bases?
Write the cation first, then the anion. Then balance the charges.
What element generally appears in the formula of an acid?
Hydrogen
What ion generally appears in the formula of a base?
Hydroxide
