12 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
Atomic size (horizontally)
Decreases as more protons are added but no new shells are made
Atomic Radius (vertically)
Increases as the shells get farther away from the nucleus and its protons.
ionization energy (vertically)
decreases as you go down as electrons are easier to remove the further they are from the nucleus
ionization energy (horizontally)
increases to the right as elements are more stable towards that direction as the shells fill but after a full orbital the IE drops a bit then rises
Paramagnetic
Has unpaired electrons and is attracted to a magnetic field
Diamagnetic
All electrons are paired and is not attracted to a magnetic field
Valence electron configuration
Just the electrons in the last period or the part after the pseudo - noble configuration
Noble gas configuration
Add the last noble gas in brackets and put in the valence electrons
n
principal quantum number. the level of the shell
l
angular momentum quantum number. the type of orbital
ml
magnetic quantum number. the shape of the orbital
ms
spin quantum number. direction of the electron spinning. 1/2 or -1/2
