Because dyes will stain skin and clothing

Define the following terms as they relate to this experiment

ORIGIN ?

The location of the spotted area

Solvent front

The leading edges of the mobile phase

Rf

Means the retention or retardation factor

= distance traveled by component,cm

______________________

Distance traveled by solvent front cm

What will you use a the stationary phase in this experiment ?

The strip of chromatography paper

What will you use as the mobile phase on this experiment?

The solvent, which will flow through the stationary phase

Why is it important to keep the beaker containing the mobile phase covered while preparing your chromatography paper, and developing your chromatograms?

Because of you don't keep the beaker containing the mobile phase covered while developing your chromatograms, the mobile phase will evaporate , and you will not get any results.

Why is it important to remove the chromatography paper from the beaker before the solvent front reaches the top of paper?

Because you wouldn't be able to measure the rf value unless you can measure the start to front of the solvent on the chromatography paper.
