What is the purpose of this poem |
Personally I think it's a celebration of heroism in the way the soldiers are presented as brave but also a way to show us the truth about war and how terrible it is for the soldiers who were convinced to fight.

● Overview - from the 600 riding into battle and most dying during the battle and not returning. The weapons and imagery all connote to death) ● quotes - "Theirs but to do and die" - "Charge for the guns!.... into the valley of death" (... = insignificant bit of poem that was skipped for purpose of making quote shorter) - "not the six hundred"

Overview - poem set during a battle between Russians and British where lots of weaponry is used and vivid description of the terrors soldiers faced.
● Quotes - "Cannon to the right of them... to left.... in front" (- weapons surrounding them) - "shot and shell" - " plunged in the battery smoke" - "flash'd all their sabres bare.... sabring the gunners there" (ryme used here too) - "jaws of Death... mouth of Hell" (notice how capital letters are used at beginning of "Death" and "Hell" in the poem for emphasis) Explain each quote (language analysis) and it's effect Explain each quote (language analysis) and it's effect

● Overview - the soldiers are presented in such difficult and terrifying circumstances fighting for "the world" and the writer shows this to us asking us rhetorical questions in the poem to make us think
● quotes - "into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred" ("the six hundred" is repeated in each stanza by the way to show how many people fought and sacrificed their lives) - "was there a man dismay'd?" - "Theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die" - "boldly they rode and well" - "horse and hero fell" - "when can their glory fade?" - "Honour the charge they made! Honour the light Brigade, Noble six Hundred!"

Although this theme isn't explicit, there are a variety of quotes which link to this idea
Quotes - "Valley of death" - a link to a quote from psalms which relates to how God gives strength during the most terrifying times - honour and strength. - "mouth of hell" - metaphor - believed to be the worst place in religion - heroism shown.

Overview - the soldiers appear to go into war by the command of their leaders without knowing the truth of what war is like. They realise that it's dangerous too late.
● Quotes - "forward, the light brigade! Charge for the guns!' He said - "was there a man dismay'd?" - "theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die" - "shot and shell" - "shatter'd and sunder'd... not the six hundred"

●There are 6 stanzas which aren't the same length ●varied line lengths. ● Some enjambment like "into the valley of death Rode the six hundred" ●repetition of "six hundred" at the end of each line ●It's a narrative poem therefore chronological as shown by the position of cannons first "cannon in front" then "cannon behind". ● poem begins with rythm "half a league, half a league" - 3 beats pause then 3 beats - galloping of horses
