What are the NINE Characterisitcs of Qualitative Research? |
1. NATURAL SETTING 2. RESEARCHER AS KEY INSTRUMENT 3. MULTIPLE SOURCES OF DATA 4. INDUCTIVE DATA ANALYSIS 5. PARTICIPANTS' MEANINGS 6. EMERGENT DESIGN 7. THEORETICAL LENS 8. INTERPRETIVE INQUIRY 9. HOLISTIC ACCOUNT |
Natural Setting refers to |
the fact that qualitative researchers do not bring individuals to a lab but rather collect data from a field setting. |
Researcher as Key Instrument refers to |
The fact that the researcher must be present to collect data and be the main person trying to make sense of the collected data |
Multiple Sources of Data refers to |
The fact that more than one source of data is typically relied upon: interviews paired with non verbal responses, fieldwork + document analysis |
Inductive Data Analysis refers to |
Building data from the bottom up - inductively, i.e. develop theory from data And, the use of multiple perspectives And, involves working back and forth between themes |
Participants' Meanings refers to |
The fact that qual research focuses on how participants see the world and the meaning they attach to what they see. The researcher merely interprets and tries to see things from participants' view. |
Emergent Design refers to |
The less 'tightly-prescribed' approach of qual as compared to quan. Phases of the process may change/shift after researchers enter the field and collect data Changes such as: altering questions, sites visited, participants approached, etc. |
Theoretical Lens refers to |
The fact that the researcher's own perception to the study is acknowledged and represented in the study. This is considered to be the initial perspective before the research actually begins. |
Interpretive Inquiry refers to |
The fact that the researcher interprets the finding based on their own understanding * Care must be taken to ensure that the interpretation is as representative to the sample as possible |
Holistic Account refers to |
The fact that qual research goes beyond cause and effect relationships. but aims to develop a complex picture of the phenomena of interest. |
