Why can it be said that trees appear out of thin air?
their mass and the fact that the air that they take in is the most valuable part of their production and growth
Describe the overall process of photosynthesis
CO2 + H2O → C6H12O6 + O2CO2 + H2O → C6H12O6 is ReductionH2O → C6H12O6 + O2 is Oxidation
List the kinds of organisms that are photosynthetic
Algae and cyanobacteria
Where does photosynthesis occur?
The membrane of the chloroplast or the membrane of the thylakoids?
What is the overall purpose of the Calvin Cycle?

Take the energy from photosystem 1 and fix carbon
Describe the steps of the Calvin cycle

Carboxylation – take in CO2 and add it to RuBP this is catalyzed by an enzyme Rubisco then we get 3PGA. Reduction - NADPH, reducing the 3PGA’s and it reduces to triose phosphates.Regeneration - 3 carbon compounds are reorganized and combined to produce RuBP; 2 triose phosphate will go another way to make glucose and the other will be reused as RuBP.
Explain the role pigments play in photosynthesis

They increase the range of wavelengths which the photosynthetic machinery of a plant can absorb. They tap sources of light energy which would otherwise be unused by the plant, if the plant relied only on chlorophyll a as a light harvesting pigment.
Briefly describe the steps of the light dependent reactions

Photosystem II- Water comes in and donates an electron the the water becomes oxidized and turns to oxygen ETC- also be referred to as the “Z” scheme because of the overall configuration. It is a series of redox reactions in which electrons are passed from one compound to another. Photosystem I- energizes electrons with a second input of light energy so they have enough energy to reduce NADP+ Step 1: Excited electrons in chlorophyll pass it down to the reaction center (2 reaction centers- Photosystem 1 and Photosystem 2)Step 2: Water replaces those electrons forming oxygenStep 3: Electrons are passed through the electron transport chain and hydrogens are pumped to the lumenStep 4: Hydrogens are passed through ATP synthase to form ATP Step 5: To make more ATP for the calvin cycle electrons will move cyclically back through the electron transport chain

Describe excess light energy
they become more reduced and you have an oxygen molecule that =is going to be mingling with everything it bumps into. They cure this with antioxidants or xanthophylls
Describe photorespiration
Rubisco grabs CO2 but they can also grab oxygen. If there is too much oxygen in the cell it will grab the oxygen. Plants can use oxygen, they don’t produce enough carbs and they die.
Describe inefficient energy conversion
Only a small percentage of sunlight turns into carbs
