Preamble
The first part of the Constitution, it describes the purpose of the document and the government it creates.
Impeach
To impeach an official is to charge the person with an offense committed while in office. Only the House of Representatives can vote to impeach.
Elastic clause
This clause is named because it gives Congress flexability to fulfill its duties.
Federal judiciary
The Supreme Court and lower federal courts make this up. Federal judiciary can also be known as the federal court system.
Independent judiciary
A system in which judges cannot be removed nor have their salaries reduced for making non-popular decisions
Precedents
Court decisions used as guides in the Supreme Court in deciding similar cases.
Judicial review
Power to review an action of the legislative or executive branch and call it unconstitutional.
Federalism
Division of power between the federal and state governments.
Delegated powers
Powers to borrow money, coin money, raise an army and navy, declare war, make treaties, establish post offices, and protect patents and copyrights.
Reserved powers
Any power not expressly granted to the national government would remain with the states and the people.
Concurrent powers
Some powers delegated to Congress are not denied to the states.
Supremacy clause
A clause that affirms that the Constitution and federal laws are the supreme law of the land.
